287th Army Band team places second in ruck march

By Lt. Col. Dan Arena

A team from the Army Guard’s 287th Band placed second in the annual Six-mile Ruck March Race held Saturday, Feb. 9, hosted on Dover Air Force Base by their Security Forces Squadron.

Last year a composite Delaware Army Guard team won the title against 11 other teams, but this year there were 36 teams participating. While the 287th team finished the six-mile course in about 55 minutes (beating last year’s winning time by more than four minutes), they were edged out for first place by less than one minute and placed a very respectable second.

The team, consisting of Staff Sgt. Gregory M. Calloway, Staff Sgt. Michael Jochen, Sgt. David J. Halley, and Spc. Alison Taylor trained long and hard for the race and their efforts were rewarded on race day. Particularly noteworthy was that Taylor, in spite of carrying the 30-pound ruck, still beat out more than 100 male competitors.

All second place team members were honored with nice pocket watches in recognition of their achievements.
